More Information
Thank you for your interest in Joseph Phelps Vineyards. We welcome the opportunity to host you. We offer two different tasting options: terrace tastings and seminars. All tastings consist of a sampling of 6 current releases, including our flagship wine, Insignia. Our tastings are limited to 6 people per party and require advance reservations.
Terrace tastings: These are casual, self-paced tastings on our terrace overlooking our vineyards (weather permitting) or in our barrel lined Oval Room. Monday through Friday, tastings start at 10 a.m. and are scheduled every half hour until the last tasting at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $25.00 per person.
Seminars: These are fun, educational and in-depth tastings in our intimate and elegant Great Hall. There are 6 different topics that change daily. Each seminar is approximately 90 minutes and costs $40.00 per person. On weekdays, the seminars are given at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, seminars are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Following are descriptions of the seminar topics:
Insignia Blending: Test your skills as a winemaker. Experiment with blending components that go into our award-winning Insignia. Compare your blends with our current vintage of Insignia.
Le Nez: Hone your sommelier skills with our “aroma identity” challenge, where 12 different aromas frequently found in wine will test your olfactory senses.
Tasting Terroir: Explore how location and climate affect wines. We’ll look at 32+ years of making Insignia to see how the wine has changed over the years. Discover how different vineyard locations result in the expression of terroir and help to make Insignia unique and highly rated.
Barrel: This seminar explores winemaking in general and the specific place the barrel holds in the development and maturation of wine. In addition to the current release wines, we will also taste three barrel samples of our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine Appreciation: This seminar leads guests through an exploration of wine’s appeal to all the senses. Sharpen your skills at tasting and evaluating wine. Enhance your knowledge of wine history, proper serving and storage.
Cool Californians: Freestone Chardonnay & Pinot Noir. Joseph Phelps has been a leader not only in Bordeaux and Rhone style wines, but equally in Burgundian varietals. This seminar highlights the history of Burgundy as well as Joseph Phelps Vineyard's passion to produce world class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs at our newest vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, Freestone Vineyards. Participants will taste several Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs and will, of course, enjoy a taste of Insignia at the end of the seminar.
On Saturdays, we offer Insignia Blending at 11a.m. and Wine Appreciation at 2p.m. On Sunday, we offer Le Nez seminars at 11a.m. and 2p.m.
For August: Barrel Seminar will be on Monday; Le Nez on Tuesday; Insignia Blending on Wednesday; Tasting Terroir on Thursday and Cool Californians on Friday.
In September: Cool Californians will be on Monday; Barrel on Tuesday; Le Nez on Wednesday; Insignia Blending on Thursday and Tasting Terroir on Friday.
